PERIODIC DETAINEES
The sentencing option of periodic detention, that is, where detainees are in custody for two consecutive days per week and remain at liberty for the rest of the week, is available only in the Australian Capital Territory. Periodic detention ceased being a sentencing option in New South Wales in October 2010, although some persons sentenced prior to this time remain on periodic detention. Nationally, there were 58 periodic detainees at 30 June 2013; the majority of these were in ACT (51 persons) with 7 persons serving periodic detention orders in NSW. Males comprise 95% of persons serving periodic detention orders.
For those people serving periodic detention orders, 22% (13 people) were sentenced for traffic and vehicle regulatory offences, fraud 15% (9 persons) and acts intended to cause injury 14% (8 persons). (Table 36)
